Digitizing our Indigenous Seeds

This centre(G-BiACK Seed Learning Centre) is working on a project that somehow blends very traditional concepts with the dynamic developments of modern technology. In this case, we refer to the digitization of our Seed Learning Centre through creating a digital seed cataloging system with attached QR codes. The objective of this project is to protect and value indigenous seeds, promote agroecological practices, and empower farming communities.
Promoting Agroecology and Indigenous Seeds

Agroecology promotes sustainable farming in concordance with nature. An important tenet of agroecology is the use of indigenous seeds. These are adapted to the climate and ecosystem of a given place. Seeds, therefore, are instrumental in the twin tasks of preserving biodiversity and food security and cultural heritage.

In Kenya, organizations like G-BiACK have played a pivotal role in conserving such seed resources.

Digital Seed Catalog: Bridging Tradition and Technology

The digital seed catalog has a detailed reference for indigenous varieties. Integrated QR codes give farmers and other stakeholders instant access to specific information on the seed variety such as its characteristics, cultivation, and uses. The system not only assists dissemination but creates a link between farmers and heritage seeds.
Advantages of the Digital Seed Catalog

– Accessibility: Farmers can independently access indigenous seeds’ information and make sound decisions.

– Preserving Knowledge: Documentation of anthropo-seed knowledge in the digital space protects such vital indigenous knowledge for the future.

– Encouraging Agroecological Practices: Enriching farmers about the main advantages and applications of indigenous seeds shall encourage them into sustainable agricultural choices.
