What we do
At the GROW BIOINTENSIVE Agriculture Center of Kenya (G-BiACK), we work with smallholder farmers, schools, and communities to build sustainable food systems that nourish people and protect the environment. Our services are designed to equip farmers with practical skills, preserve indigenous knowledge, and promote ecological agriculture that sustains both livelihoods and the planet.
1. Training and Capacity Building
We offer tailored training programs in GROW BIOINTENSIVE Agriculture and other sustainable farming methods.
Our trainings are highly practical and focus on:
Building and maintaining healthy soils through composting and double digging
Efficient use of space, water, and natural resources
Organic pest and disease control
Seed saving and seed multiplication
Integrating nutrition and food security in household farming
We train farmers, students, youth groups, community organizations, and agricultural officers. Sessions are conducted at our training center in Thika and through outreach programs across Kenya. Graduates of our programs often go on to establish model farms and train others in their communities.
2. Research and Demonstration
Our center functions as a demonstration and learning hub where ecological farming methods are tested and showcased.
We conduct small-scale research on:
Soil fertility restoration
Crop rotation and intercropping systems
Climate-resilient indigenous crops
Compost quality and yield comparisons
Visitors can tour our demonstration plots to see the principles of Grow Biointensive Agriculture in action. These serve as open classrooms where farmers learn by observing, practicing, and experimenting.
3. Seed Banking and Conservation
We are committed to protecting indigenous and open-pollinated seed varieties that have been passed down through generations.
Our Seed Bank collects, preserves, and distributes traditional seeds adapted to Kenya’s diverse ecosystems.
This service includes:
Seed collection and documentation (including origin, variety, and viability)
Training farmers on seed saving and storage techniques
Establishing community seed banks and seed exchange networks
Promoting indigenous food cultures through fairs and exhibitions
Through our seed conservation work, we help farmers regain seed sovereignty, ensuring that they can grow and share their own resilient, locally adapted crops.
4. Community Outreach and Extension Services
G-BiACK brings knowledge directly to communities through outreach programs in different counties.
Our team works with:
Farmer groups and cooperatives
Women’s organizations
Schools and community-based projects
We support them in establishing kitchen gardens, compost sites, and demonstration farms. Field officers provide continuous technical guidance and follow-up visits to ensure lasting impact.
We also encourage farmer-to-farmer learning as an effective and inclusive approach to scaling up sustainable agriculture.
5. Youth Empowerment and Skills Development
We believe that the future of agriculture lies in the hands of young people.
Through our Youth Empowerment Program, we equip young men and women with practical skills in:
Agroecology
Tailoring and bead work
Cooking and Baking
Computer Literacy
The program not only creates employment opportunities but also inspires youth to view agriculture as an innovative and rewarding profession.
